The Wastewater
Monitor provides waste treatment plant operators and water quality managers
with an on-line system capable of performing a wide range of chemical and
physical analysis regimes, with a level of performance equivalent to certified
laboratory analyses.
Real time measurement and validation of results by on-board reference standards deliver unmatched levels of confidence in the results.
The Wastewater Monitor employs state-of-the-art patented technology which enables continuous testing of the quality of waste effluents. A variety of parameters, including Total Phosphorous and Total Nitrogen can be tested in a compact on-line system. Parameters measured are those usually required by operators, managers and regulatory authorities.
Continual monitoring does away with typical grab sample testing where results from a laboratory are not usually available until 2 to 5 days after the samples are taken. Results with the Wastewater Monitor can be obtained in less than 10 minutes.

Description of processes
Flow Injection Analysis (FIA) A known quantity of sample is mixed with known quantities of chemicals. This mixture is digested, which breaks down nitrogen and phosphorous containing compounds into simpler molecules whose concentrations can be measured colorimetrically.
Ion Selective Electrode A sensor is immersed in the solution, which enables the concentration of that parameter to be measured by electrical means.
Standard laboratory methods are used for determinations. Reagent usage of these is dependent on the frequency of the tests.
Operating Software
Custom made software has been designed to provide:
Sampling results can be obtained in less than 10 minutes. Tests of the same parameter or of different parameters can be obtained at 10 minute intervals (with no standard tests) and in 30 minutes (including standardisation tests). The frequency of the testing can be set locally or remotely by the operator.
Communication
The Wastewater Monitor can be reprogrammed when necessary to vary the sampling frequency. This can be done from the waste treatment works central control room or at the monitor. Most recent results are available on-site at the monitor. Results can be stored and transferred to a central data handling system.
The data output can be produced as a 4 -20 mA signal which can be fed into the waste treatment plant's process control system.
Three monthly maintenance will be required to change tubing, whilst reagents will need replenishment according to the frequency that samples are analysed.
Alarms
Alarms will be triggered when:
The Aqualab provides water quality managers with a cost effective, reliable alternative to all presently available methods of water analysis.
The Aqualab system performs a wide range of chemical and physical analysis regimes, automatically and unattended in the field, with a level of performance equivalent to certified laboratory analysis.
Real time measurement and validation of field analyses by on-board reference standards delivers an unmatched level of confidence in the results obtained.
The precision performance of Aqualab is provided at a fraction of the cost-per-analysis of a typical grab sampling and laboratory analysis program.
The Aqualab is complemented by a range of optional installation and communication packages. For monitoring programs in seawater, rivers, dams, lakes or in industrial environments, the Aqualab can be configured for optimum performance to meet site specific conditions. Remote control of all operating parameters and data retrieval are available with all of the communication package options.
System versatility is enhanced by software which enables users to pre-set monitoring intervals, trigger levels and alarm functions. Users can automatically obtain the most valuable data during significant events. System interrogation and programming of individual sensor monitoring frequencies can be conducted at any time. On-board data storage provides additional systems support to the facility of remote retrieval and computer storage of results.

Results Validation with On-Board Chemistries
The on-board reagent packages include both low and high range concentrations of standard solutions for the determination of unknown sample concentrations in the analysis of Reactive Phosphate, Ammonia and Nitrate. Results are confirmed directly in the field in the same manner as standard laboratory procedures.
Also, single reference standards for confirmation of sensor performance in the determination of pH and Electrical Conductivity are included.
In addition, the Aqualab includes on-board chemical reagents required for sample modifications (adjusts pH to greater than 11) in the analysis of Ammonia. Also included are the reagents for ortho-Phosphate determination, based on a reaction which forms a Phospho-Molybdate (blue colour) complex, the same chemistries as performed in the standard laboratory method.
De-Ionised water and a cleaning solution complete the chemical reagents packages. The system will automatically backflush and clean the analytical train and intake lines ensuring a clean system between analyses.

The Mobile Telephone Communications Package includes a MNP10 modem and data interface for transmission at 9600 Baud.
Landline communication is interfaced with an MNP10 modem.
Satellite network communication permits relay of data to a central control station by the Inmarsat-C Satellite. Includes an Inmarsat-C Transceiver, Modac Model MD300 interface unit, solar panels, power controller, batteries and weatherproof cabinet.
