The gage consists of a metal plate with accurately positioned markings. This plate is then mounted on a wall or pier, where it visually provides a direct means of determining the water level. 

The metal plates are heavy 18 gauge (0.048 in or 1.2 mm) enameling iron or steel, which is completely covered with a baked-on porcelain enamel finish, that resists rust or discoloration. 

Different colors of enamel are used to provide the markings; typically black numbers on a white background. Heavy metal grommets with a 0.2 in opening are installed for mounting the plates with #8 or 4 mm hardware. 

Several styles of Gage are available. The most basic difference is that some are provided with the water levels printed directly on them; these are most useful where there is a limited amount of water level change, such as behind a weir or in a flume. The other style has major values of water level mounted as separate, large numerals alongside the Gage. This style is very versatile, and most useful where a large range is to be covered, or the Gage is to be observed from a long distance. See the individual standard Gage descriptions that follow. Numbered Styles

Style A 
The Style A Staff Gage is 4 inches wide, marked at every foot, tenth, and 0.02 foot with total elevations. It is available in 3-1/3 foot sections for numbering from 0 to 13-1/3 feet. Higher numbering is available on special order. 

Style C 
Style C is 2-1/2 inches wide, graduated to hundredths and marked at every foot and every tenth. Numbered 3-1/3 foot sections are available from 0 to 20 feet (higher numbering on special order). Style C is also available in 1, 1-1/2, 2, 3 and 5 foot lengths.

Style I 
Style I is 2-1/2 inches wide, graduated in inches and marked every 1/4 inch. The style is available in any length ranging from 0 to 99 inches. The maximum length available in one piece is 48 inches. By special order only.

Unnumbered Styles

Style E 
Style E is 3-1/2 inches wide, graduated in feet and tenths. Separate figures (black figures on 2 by 3 inch white porcelain enameled plates) are fastened on a pier or wall to number any elevations desired. This style is available in 1, 2 and 5 foot sections.

Style M 
Style M is a metric gage, 65 mm wide. It is divided into centimeters with each decimeter numbered. Gages for any elevation may be assembled by using separate figures (black figures on 2 by 3 inch white porcelain enameled plates). Style M is available in 1 meter sections.
