The Environmental Modem 2400

The Stevens Environmental Modem 2400 is an industrial grade modem designed to provide reliable telemetry over the dial-up telephone system from remote locations with harsh environments. The modem is designed to retrieve data from the Stevens single and multiparameter data loggers, but will provide excellent service wherever high performance is desired.

Modem performance is the result of a carefully engineered design. CMOS integrated circuits provide low power, reliable operation over a wide temperature range. Solid-state surge suppressors and fuses greatly reduce the possibility of damage to circuits by current surges from strong electrical sources, such as high power lines or lightning strikes in the area.

The very low quiescent power drain between calls permits long-term operation on battery power supplies. When used with Stevens data loggers, the Environmental Modem 2400 offers many advantages. These instruments are designed to operate together as a system to reliably return data to the caller and use a minimum of power in doing so. Power may be from dry cell or rechargeable lead-acid batteries. Very long-term operation is possible when the system is powered from a rechargeable battery and solar panel.

Current or historic data may be retrieved from distant measuring sites through the modem and the public switched telephone system. Furthermore, with most Stevens loggers, data is also backed up on-site in a removable, computer-readable Data Card. The simplest calling system consists of a basic computer, running a communications program and connected to a modem with similar capability to the Environmental Modem 2400. This concept can be extended to a large network where the program can be instructed to automatically call and retrieve data from many remote sites over a large area.
