DSTmilli – Data Storage Tag
Temperature and depth recorder

DSTmilli
The DSTmilli is a miniature data logger available with two sensors, temperature and depth (pressure).Data are stored into a non volatile (EEPROM) memory. All measurements are time related, utilising a real time clock inside the DST.Optionally, the DSTmilli is available with a temperature sensor only.

Easy to use

DSTmilli is supplied with a supporting software for Windows, and an upload box that is connected to a PC computer. All communications and data transfer is wireless via the upload box.Simply insert the DST into the upload box, and communication can be established with the software. There is no need for opening the DST, and the logger can be reused as long as battery lasts. Before use of the DST, the user sets the sampling interval and starting time. After recapture of DST, the data is retrieved to a PC computer, using upload box and software from Star-Oddi.

Research applications

DSTmilli is specially designed for tagging fish for analysing fish migration, distribution, feeding behavior, vertical  and horizontal movements.  DSTmilli can be implanted into the fish or fastened externally.  DSTmilli is ideal for research on other marine animals as well.  The recaptured DSTs provide valuable information on the behavioral patterns of the tagged animal.  For recapture purposes, customers can define their own text on the housings.

DSTmilli can also be placed as a stand-alone logger for sampling in underwater environments. DSTmilli can for example be utilised in research projects within the fields of fisheries research, marine biology, oceanography,  zoology, limnology and ecology.

Accessories
     Upload box

For communicating with the DSTmilli, a special upload box from Star-Oddi is supplied.  The recorder is inserted into the hole in the upload box.  The spherical end should face down.  The recorder is twisted until the green light is on.   Communication can be established using the SeaStar software and set in Measurement Mode. Even though the battery is dead, the user can always retrieve data because the recorder is fed with power from the PC computer through the upload box.

SeaStar - Graphic supporting software for Microsoft Windows

The SeaStar software allows the user to define the start time of recordings (year/month/date, /hour/min.).  Thus it is possible to save data memory until the recorder is placed at the measuring site.  This feature is also convenient when several recorders are required to start recording at the same time.  The user also defines the sampling interval, which can be from 1 second to few hours.  The user has the option to define more than one sampling interval for memory increase efficiency.  Up to six different sampling intervals can be defined.  The user also defines number of measurements to be taken at each interval.  The intervals recycle until memory is full.  The DSTmilli automatically gets the clock from the PC computer once connection is established.

The SeaStar software retrieves the accumulated data and processes it in graphs and tabular form.  Maximum, minimum and mean temperatures are found.  The data can be exported to other data processing software packages.  Charts can saved as bitmap (bmp) or Windows Metafile (wmf) files.

Housing's capabilities

The white housing is made of bio-compatible material, not endangering the health of the tagged animal.

The white housing has one attachment hole.  For a two point attachment on fish, Star-Oddi provides a two

       point stainless steel wire fastener.

The housing insures excellent response time.  The temperature sensor is mounted directly on the inner side

       of the housing.

The DSTmilli is also available in transparent housing, which is made of more lightweight material.  The

transparent housing might be useful for the smaller animals/species.
