Starr Oddi Data Storage Tag
Since 1993, the DST tags have been used in oceans
and waters around the world. Various fish species have been tagged internally
or on the exterior with the DST tags. The DST has given scientists valuable
data for their researches, e.g. information about the behaviour of fish
migration and distribution in the oceans. The DST is capable of measuring
temperature, depth, salinity and angle.
DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS:
-
The DST Data Storage Tag is designed as a small, easy-to-use
product that is handy in difficult circumstances.
-
Transparent housing, with the inside electronics, provide
excellent camouflage for externally tagged fish.
-
For internal tagging, a tube is attached from the tag to
the exterior for use in visual identification.
-
Messages regarding owner’s identification of tag can be placed
inside the tag and are visible through the transparent housing.
APPLICATION OBJECTIVES:
-
Excellent tool for monitoring behavior of marine animals.
-
Comparison of growth between fish from same and different
environments.
-
Tracking the trail of the fish by comparing a series of point
measurements of environmental factors with available data for the ocean.
-
Register long term environmental changes in the surroundings
and their relation to the behaviour of the fish. For short-term studies,
e.g. diurnal rhythm in relation to vertical swimming pattern.
-
Obtaining optimum environmental data for application in aquaculture.
Design Features:
-
Weight approximates neutral buoyancy.
-
Tag is started by simply removing an attached magnet.
-
All measurements are time related.
-
Designed for both external and internal tagging.
-
Measured data is preserved in memory without battery backup.
-
Data transfer to a PC RS232, by plugging to tag electronics.
-
Standard data ASCII file produced, prepared for use in most data processing
software.
-
Cost effective design
Easy to use:
The user specifies timing of measurements:
a. Starting time for first measurement (time from removal of magnet
until first measurement).
b. Measurement intervals and number of samplings.
The tag is delivered with an attached magnet, which keeps it inactive.
By removing the magnet, the tag is activated. Data retrieval is done
by the user with the PC interface unit from Star-Oddi.
Quality:
The design concept and careful selection of components give a compact
construction with the latest and most advanced electronic technology.
